When people begin Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), one of the most common questions they ask is, “How long will it take before I see results?” While every patient heals at a different pace depending on their condition and overall health, there is a predictable pattern of recovery that many patients experience.

Let’s take a look at a typical healing timeline for a patient with a wound that was not responding to traditional wound care for more than several weeks. After adding HBOT to their treatment plan, typically 20 to 40 sessions, five days per week, remarkable changes begin happening beneath the surface long before they’re visible to the eye.

Weeks 1–2: Cellular Activation (Sessions 1–10)

The first phase of healing focuses on creating the right environment for recovery.

During each HBOT session, the patient breathes medical-grade oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure, allowing oxygen to dissolve directly into the bloodstream and reach damaged tissues that previously weren’t receiving enough oxygen.

In these first 10 sessions, the body begins to:

During this stage:

  • Bright red granulation tissue develops
  • Fibroblasts produce new collagen
  • Healthy tissue replaces damaged tissue
  • The wound edges begin contracting inward

Granulation tissue is one of the clearest visual indicators that the wound is progressing exactly as it should.

Weeks 5–6 and Beyond: Skin Regeneration & Wound Closure (Sessions 21–40)

With a healthy blood supply established, the final stage of healing begins.

New skin cells migrate across the collagen framework created during earlier phases, gradually sealing the wound. At the same time, white blood cells continue eliminating lingering bacteria, significantly reducing the risk of infection.

By the end of a typical HBOT protocol, many chronic wounds achieve:

  • Complete wound closure
  • Stronger, healthier tissue
  • Improved resistance to future breakdown
  • Reduced risk of complications and amputation

One of the most important things to understand about HBOT is that healing is cumulative. While some patients notice improvements early, the most significant changes occur as each treatment builds upon the last.
